Australian Education Week: Australian expert speaks on Maritime Regulation and Enforcement to Sri Lankan government officials

On 17 February, as part of Australian Education Week, Mr Cameron Moore, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law at the University of New England, gave a presentation on the topic of maritime regulation and enforcement to Sri Lankan officials from the Sri Lanka Police Service, Sri Lanka Navy, Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General’s Department.

Australian Education Week is an annual event that showcases Australian education excellence through an Education Exhibition, Australian alumni awards, school engagement programs, guest lectures and master classes.

Mr Moore is an example of Australian education excellence, having joined the School of Law in 2005 after experience in both private and government practice. His teaching, research and supervision interests include Law of the Sea, International Law, the Law of Armed Conflict and Military Law.

During the presentation Mr Moore and the attendees discussed topics including fisheries, border protection and piracy. As Australian High Commissioner Robyn Mudie noted when introducing the presentation, Australia and Sri Lanka are both island nations with a shared interest in the regulation and enforcement of these maritime issues.

“The presentation by Mr Moore builds on the excellent relationship Australia shares with the Sri Lanka Police Service, the Sri Lanka Navy, the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Department. Australia is privileged to work in partnership with these four organisations on a wide range of issues including counter people smuggling, legal cooperation and transnational crime” High Commissioner Mudie said.
