Australian Federal Police conduct Criminal Asset Confiscation and Financial Investigations Symposium

The Australian Federal Police conducted a Criminal Asset Confiscation and Financial Investigations Symposium at the Institute for Security and Law Enforcement Studies in the Maldives between 9 and 11 September 2014. 35 representatives from the Maldives Police Service, Anti-Corruption Commission, Auditor General’s Office, Bank of Maldives, Prosecutor General’s Office, Maldives Monetary Authority and the Capital Market Development Authority participated in the symposium.

The Chief Guest of the closing ceremony held 11 September 2014 was the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority, Azeema Adam, with the Maldives’ Commissioner of Police, Hussain Waheed, also in attendance. The Governor, in her speech, stated that this was a very opportune time for this program as anti-money laundering legislation was a month away from implementation. The Governor also stated that the “MMA is prepared to work closely with all relevant parties to finalize the regulations to make sure they are in place to prevent financial crime and to ensure that the financial sector of our developing nation is stable”. She also said that raising the awareness of the public is key in terms of preventing financial crime and that law enforcement alone cannot do it.

The Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing legislation was endorsed by the Maldivian Parliament in April 2014 and will come into force 14 October 2014.
