Australian High Commission joins forces with Hindu College in Clean up the World Initiative
The Australian High Commission marked Clean up the World Weekend (17-19 September) by organising a recycling and waste management workshop the Hindu College, Colombo. The principal aim of this year’s campaign was to raise youth awareness for environmental protection and conservation issues.
On 17 September, the Australian High Commission organised a consultant from Abans to assist 40 senior prefects from Hindu College, Colombo develop a recycling program for their school. The presentation, which included a mini exhibition, lecture and workshop, gave students advice on designing and implementing their own recycling and information campaign. In his welcoming remarks, Stephen Foster, Third Secretary at the Australian High Commission, highlighted Australia's ongoing involvement in the global effort to protect and preserve the environment.
Millions across the globe participated in Clean Up the World Weekend 2010, an initiative supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The campaign, held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is in its 18th year and works at the grassroots level to mobilise global communities to clean up, fix up and conserve their local environments. The Australian Government through DFAT has been an official supporter of the global environmental campaign since it was initiated by Ian Kiernan AO in 1993.
