A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).
Signed on 15 August 2021, the new MOU will facilitate cooperation between Maldives and Australia in the exchange of information related to money laundering and terrorism financing. It will further strengthen the strong existing partnership between AUSTRAC and the Financial Intelligence Unit of the MMA.
The MOU was celebrated at the virtual presentation of credentials of High Commissioner of Maldives to Australia, HE Mr Omar Abdul Razzak, on 3 September 2021. Reflecting on the strong bilateral cooperation between the two countries, newly-accredited High Commissioner Razzak commended the new MOU as an important milestone in our shared efforts to counter transnational crime. Australian High Commissioner to Maldives, HE Mr David Holly, said “Maldives and Australia already enjoy strong policing, security and defence cooperation, and this understanding cements another way that our two countries are working together toward a more stable and secure Indian Ocean region.”
